    It’s funny how in the USA 90% of the train traffic is freight, whereas in the UK it’s 90% passenger.

    I think the main factor is distance - in the UK it’s easier and faster to ship goods by road these days - one end of the country to the other is rarely more than 7 hours, but in the USA the distances are far greater as are the shipment sizes.

    And for passenger travel, it takes the same time more or less to go by train as to fly in the UK, but in the USA a long journey takes a lot longer by train.
